I got a call from these same guys today. Unfortunately, I gave them my security code.
Here's how the scam works:
1) The pitch. 6 months of free service if you prepay using Green Dot Money. And since we love you so much, we'll through in HBO and CineMax free for a year and we'll turn it on instantly. All you have to do is add money worth 6 months of programming to a GREEN DOT Money card, and call us back.
2)Then they say, in order to verify your account, we need your passcode or last four of SSN. This is where the trick starts.
3)Using your phone number,(remember they called you), and the passcode, they get your user ID. (try it). Then Dish is *** enough here, if one knows your userid and phone number, they can reset your password. [Note: Even if you change your passcode, once hacked, they can get in again unless you change your userid and phone numbers as well.]
4)Once in your account, they order services and changes to prove to you that they are the real deal. In my case, they even made a payment from a stolen bank account.
5) So call Dish, and have them put a block on your account.
